    Ditch the harness - they are made to enable the dog to pull: sledge, tracking, agitation. HARNESS - a big marketing con.

    You talk about corrections. What corrections do you deploy with a harness? hahaha. And then, you expect Natalie as the owner to do the same as you do as the dog trainer with the same skills as a supposed dog trainer???? Have compassion for Natalie. Give her the tools that she needs to control the situation, which may involve a prong collar or an eCollar (extremely compassionate tools). But, set the owner up for success instead of prioritizing your stupid ideology about dog training. Be a REALLY compassionate dog trainer, not one that aligns with a stupid ideology.

      Dear Sam, Thank you for watching and for your review of my work. I have decided to review each point in your comment. _You talk about corrections. What corrections do you deploy with a harness? hahaha._ *It's very clear Sam, the corrections were being moved back firmly each time, reset and to start again.* _And then, you expect Natalie as the owner to do the same as you do as the dog trainer with the same skills as a supposed dog trainer????_ *Yes I showed her how to do the correction amongst much else. You literally saw her do it and I expect her to carry on.* _Have compassion for Natalie. Give her the tools that she needs to control the situation, which may involve a prong collar or an eCollar (extremely compassionate tools)._ *I do have compassion. I went there free of charge to show her what to do. I speak to her anytime she needs help and she continues to make progress. I did give her 'the tools' just not the the tools you mention.* _But, set the owner up for success instead of prioritizing your stupid ideology about dog training. Be a REALLY compassionate dog trainer, not one that aligns with a stupid ideology._ *I did set her up for success. We got success on the day and she continues to build on it. I'm saddened to hear you think building a dog's confidence is a stupid ideology* Sam i'm sorry I have to mark you 0/10 for your skills in observation. Also its a 0/10 for your reasoning skills - you seem to be an enemy of logic and oblivious to ideas that do not align with your thinking. On top of that, your childish demeanour and cheap digs combined with your perceived but mistaken authority of this subject has led me to give you an F for Fail. For the sake of those around you and whom you talk to, please try and be better. I will later be reviewing your work on your channel which is your rendition of 'silent night' you sang in the church. Which I can only assume you step foot in to sing - but do not practice Christianity in any shape or form. Your sincerely, Nigel

    Well the human holding the leash is smiling while her dog lunges at everything so it's clearly just an improperly homed dog, because she cant take her situation seriously which makes it even more dangerous

    • @paganqueen1
      @paganqueen1 2 місяці тому

      That's a bit unfair. The smiling could be embarrassment. She probably feels inadequate. I have a very similar reactive dog and I know how uncomfortable it is to be walking down the road with him barking like a frenzied beast. He's a bichon cross Chinese crested. Is he an improperly homed dog too? I have 2 other dogs who are fine. He is unsocialised because we got him at 10 weeks old and discovered he had severe luxating patellas and was unable to walk without screaming in pain. We had to wait until he was 9 months and fully grown before he could have an operation to fix it. The day he had that operation we went into lockdown. I had to remove his stitches myself. So he has never had chance to meet other dogs or people. Don't judge people until you know the circumstances.

    • @pan0568
      @pan0568 2 місяці тому

      Very unfair and judgemental to say that. I'm sure she not smiling because she doesn't take her situation seriously. She's on camera, after all, probably feeling embarrassed and anxious. She has called in a fantastic behaviourist in Nigel so is clearly seeking help and guidance.

    • @cbcdesign001
      @cbcdesign001 2 місяці тому

      That's not a fair assessment. She is probably mortified by her dogs behaviour and the smiling is no indication of what the lady is thinking or feeling.

    Thank you for this video. I have a dog who is not quite as bad as this but not far off. We no longer take any of our 3 dogs out because I can't handle him with the other 2 dogs as well. They seem to feed off his anxiety. He was a lock down puppy. I have seen your method of turning the dog around before but have not tried it because he has bad knees. He has had to have 2 surgeries on one knee, the first, luxating patella, at 9 months old and the second, TPLO, only 10 weeks ago aged 4. He also needs surgery on the other knee for luxating patella and preventative treatment for ruptured cruciate ligament. I am reluctant to keep pulling him back because of the damage it could do to his already damaged legs. Is there another way to do this method?

    • @nigelreed
      @nigelreed 2 місяці тому

      Pleasure. You will have to manage the environment better and use a method called retreat then treat - Assuming your dog takes treats (Oreo wouldn't). Encouraging the dog to make the decision to come back to you, before moving forward. Slowly closing the distance.

    • @paganqueen1
      @paganqueen1 2 місяці тому

      @@nigelreed He doesn't take treats. He's not "there" when we go out. He is just so focused on getting back home as fast as possible. He is so stressed we don't like walking him at all.

    Hi Nigel. Good video. I really need to do this every walk with my highlt reactive Queensland Heeler. I love for her to have the freedom to play and run around but that does not help her overall obedience. But she has pretty good recall and good basic commands. Mainly the reactivity is the bugger. Do you think it could be a genetic thing and can that be improved. And what is the name of the harness you use? Thank you.

    • @nigelreed
      @nigelreed 2 місяці тому

      Hi there, i doubt it is a genetic issue. Your dog has a level of confidence in you as a leader, in their environment and how they should be behaving. Aim to build her confidence in every area, each day and you will see results. I have no idea what harness that is, sorry. I use Ruffwear though.

      Exercise will address the symptoms not the cause. The cause is a lack of confidence in leadership, environment (dogs and certain people) and how the dog should be behaving.

    4:06 why do you lift up the harnas hard like that? just curious cause i thought it's unnecessary to pull up the dogs body like that

      I think its partly to keep her walking as, due to being on a harness, she can easily spin around. This is the problem with harnesses on reactive dogs.

      @flipnshifty You see at the beginning (and times at the end) of the video when Nat has Oreo, she goes into attack mode on her hind legs - lunging at perceived dangers. Due to her size and behaviour just using the lead attached to the harness will more likely result in her flipping out for longer periods and landing awkwardly. The quicker I put a stop to her fear-based habits by grabbing the harness, when necessary, the quicker I regain control, reduce her mental stress, and show her to listen to me. She didn’t experience any physical pain and it worked quicker.

    This video was the one that helped me!! I've been wanting to teach my dog to give paw, started last week, and today he finally did it all by himself 😭❤ THANK YOU! I saw many other videos but those are already dogs that KNOW how to do it so It doesn't really help that much and would discourage me. Thanks so much for the help!!

    My 8 month old puppy Hudson (chihuahua spaniel mix) is dealing with isolation distress. He gets plenty of exercise and nice long walks twice a day. When someone is home, Hudson is fine to be in his crate, wait patiently, or play with his toys in another part of the home while we’re in the bathroom or kitchen. Initially we believed him to have separation anxiety, but as we reinforced crate training and constant rewarding for being quiet when left the room, we discovered his issue is only when we leave the home. We approach leaving our house the same way we approached crate training and keeping him in other rooms (we call them “In and Outs”).. started with short periods of time, rewards when he was calm, extended to longer periods of time the more comfortable he got. When doing In and Out training, we can build up his time to hours in his crate, or 15/20 minutes waiting outside the house (it’s a cold winter in Canada, can’t stay out there long). The problem comes when we leave the house and Hudson realizes this no longer is a training exercise, he howls excessively until our return. He refuses to relax in his crate or take a nap. He once howled for 3 hours straight when we needed to go out. How am I suppose to reward a calm puppy for my return if he’s never calm and doesn’t stop howling? We need to eventually re-enter our home, but because he’s howling that means Hudson wins. We can’t do “In and Out” build ups everytime we need to go out to the gym, dinner, grocery shopping, etc. Please help!! Michael and Stephanie

    7:30 imho this is the problem with most people and their walks we approach the dog walk like another checklist item, WE want to go from A to B and be done. where if you use 20 mjn to walk a mile or 20 min to walk to the end of your driveway at least you have moved for 20 min. not enough training , and just wanting to get it done

    i did this training with my golden retriever years ago, but also taught him quiet and speak…i would thank him, good boy and i see it, quiet…worked. one time a power guy had to come into the backyard, startled him, i heard a vicious growl and bark…i ran out and said it’s ok,thanks and quiet, he stopped and walked to me…so this can be such a safety issue. i caught my stupid neighbor hanging over the fence feeding him biscuits….i put a stop to that…i want my dog startled if someone is climbing over the fence! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

      Sounds great Kate. Especially the part where you corrected your neighbour. :)
